HOUSTON, TX – Congratulations to Julie Bodine, ValvTechnologies’ Director of Global Marketing, who earned 2nd place in the 2014 Fittest Executive Challenge, held Sunday, February 23rd at the Houston Dynamo Sports Park.

Julie was invited as one of only 20 female executives to take part in the 2014 Fittest Executive Challenge, an exciting fitness challenge for Houston Executives to raise awareness for fitness and health in the Houston business community and to recognize those passionate Executives who lead by example.

Each Executive completed three fitness challenges within a 60-minute time-frame consisting of professionally designed courses to fully challenge their strength, agility, endurance, mental determination and full-body conditioning. These events include the following movements and events: pushups, inverted rows, Plyobox weighted step-ups, kettle bell swings, sit-ups, burpees and plank holds, an agility course including hurdles, ladders and cone drills, ball slams, bear crawl, weighted carry and a 5k run. Click here to view Julie’s Contender profile.

“I’m absolutely honored to have been nominated and proud of a 2nd place finish representing ValvTechnologies,” Bodine said. “The event was well run and with so many tests (about 15 in all) was a pretty accurate measurement of fitness.”

An avid CrossFitter, Bodine is no stranger to competition. Recent challenges include a first place finish in the Sundown Showdown team competition in Newport Beach, California, a seventh place finish in the Femme Royale Battle in Spring, Texas and an 11th place finish in the Atomic CrossFit Hammer and Chisel competition in Stafford, Texas. Last year Bodine also completed in her first triathlon, the Kring and Chung, in Newport Beach, California.

Based in Maine, Stover will be responsible for developing and directing the long-term strategies and growth of the severe service power market. This includes growing the power business and coordinating sales strategies. In this role he will maintain key relationships and strengthen our highly-valuable distribution network to ensure the company and distribution network better serve the customer.

With more than 37 years in the power business, George is eminently qualified for this responsibility. “We chose George because of his unparalleled knowledge of power applications and challenges facing customers, years of industry experience and ability to build strong teams,” said Gary Marler, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “George is a proven leader with the talent to successfully bring people together to better serve the customer.”

For 21 years George served as the Operations Manager at Central Main Power Company which delivers over nine billion kilowatt-hours of electricity yearly to more than 600,000 retail electric customers in central and southern Maine. Based in Houston, Blackburn will report to Kevin Hunt and be responsible for global quality standards, systems and processes. In this role, he will lead the development of the quality programs and initiatives to support the continuing growth and globalization of the company.

Blackburn previously worked at Curtiss-Wright for 11 years, most recently as Supplier Quality Assurance Manager with the responsibility for selection, qualification and auditing of all Electrical Mechanical Division (EMD) suppliers’ quality assurance and manufacturing abilities to meet both systematic and customer specific requirements. Additionally he held positions as Commercial Nuclear Quality Assurance Manager, Commercial Nuclear Quality Manager, China, and Defense Products Quality Assurance Manager.

Todd served in the United States Navy for 21 years as a Submarine Nuclear Propulsion Plant Mechanical Division Leading Chief Petty Officer and earned personal awards of two Navy Commendation Metals and six Navy Achievement Metals. Additionally he has a Bachelor of Science degree in Workforce Education, Training and Development from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, Katz School of Business.

Based in Houston, Perez will report to Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Gary Marler, and be responsible for developing and directing ValvTechnologies’ global service business. This will include global service strategy development and execution that optimizes aftermarket capabilities, performance and customer experience.

Perez brings substantive service management experience and strong organizational leadership skills to the role. Prior to joining ValvTechnologies in December 2013 as North American Service Manager, he held service and operations management positions in the Fisher Controls’ Instrument and Valve division of Emerson Process Management for over 14 years. Earlier in his career he worked at Flowserve, Parker and McDonnell Douglas Space Systems.

Perez has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix. “Oliver is a results-oriented, customer-centric leader with a proven track record of growing strong and profitable service organizations,” said Hunt. “He is a valuable addition to the leadership team and we are delighted that he has accepted the Industry Director role.”

ValvTechnologies’ Commitment to Process Improvement – Second to None

The ValvTechnologies weld shop recently purchased a new Sub Arc welding machine. The sub arc process has been around for a long time but the technology has progressed producing high quality, low iron content weld overlay.

The Sub Arc is typically used on relatively large parts that need a lot of overlay metal with iron content between 5-10%. We expect it to lay down between 14-17 pounds of Inconel an hour. This is our fastest deposition rate in the shop.

The table can hold a 55” diameter and 24,000lb part. The torch has a 10 foot reach in the vertical and horizontal directions. Its first job has been to weld overlay a 30” prototype body, end caps and seats. In the picture you can see the body being welded.

Primarily, the machine will be used on 24” production parts over the next six months. A second machine has been purchased with delivery in late July.

Based in Houston, Tom will have executive responsibility for ValvTechnologies’ global sourcing, purchasing, planning, materials management, project management and logistics groups. His appointment serves to integrate the value stream between the sales order and the factory so that ValvTechnologies can better serve its customers.

Tom brings significant global leadership and supply chain operations experience to ValvTechnologies from such diverse industries as automotive, telecommunications, heavy manufacturing and valves. He has set up operations in India, China, Southeast Asia and North & South America. Most recently he served as Vice President, Global Supply Chain with JB Poindexter & Company in Houston.  He previously held similar senior leadership roles with Circor International, Harris Corporation, Twinlab and Symbol Technologies.

Tom holds a Bachelor of Science in both Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering from the New York Institute of Technology and an MBA in Finance from the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, Hofstra University.

The recently completed $8.8bn Minas-Rio iron ore project in Brazil is expected to produce 26.5 metric tonnes per annum of high quality, low contaminant iron ore pellet feed over a current mine life of 28 years. Construction is now complete, with significant progress made towards delivering first ore, on a ship, by the end of 2014.

The iron feed slurry is delivered from the mine to port via a 529 km pipeline and this is one of the largest and longest slurry pipelines ever constructed, with multiple pump stations and valve stations en-route. Originally known as the MMX Project the design work was carried out by Ausenco (formerly PSI) at their Belo Horizonte office in Brazil.

In 2007 ValvTechnologies was awarded a contract to supply more than 350 ABRASOTECH® and ABRASOCHECK® severe service valves complete with hydraulic actuators, controls and HPU’s. The valves included sizes from 1 ½” – 24” and in ASME classes 150, 300, 600, 900 and 1500. The project was delivered on schedule but land rights problems within Brazil caused significant delays in construction.

Currently ValvTechnologies is providing Anglo start-up and commissioning assistance with support from Fluxo, our representative in Brazil. At the time of the original PO this was the largest single order ever received by ValvTechnologies and was recognized as the largest order ever received by a severe service ball valve manufacturer.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an incurable, progressive degenerative neurological disorder. For reasons not yet understood, the nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement gradually deteriorate. As a result, muscles waste away, leading to paralysis and death, usually in two to five years.

ValvTechnologies has joined the fight to raise awareness of this disease as well as contribute to research with the goal finding a cure by participating in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
