A single, carefully selected valve can answer a large number of concerns.

Requirement: Molecular sieves are often utilized in the petroleum industry, especially for the purification of gas streams. Valves leading into and out of molecular sieves cycle frequently and leakage in these critical areas can make it difficult or impossible to meet product purification requirements. Sour gas dehydration is of particular interest because of the complexity introduced by the acidic and corrosive nature of H2S and CO2. The challenge for dehydration units to maintain their reliability when a valve fails to isolate and/or operate due to the abrasive wear is costly. A single, carefully selected valve can answer a large number of concerns.

A typical dehydration system consists of two or more columns packed with a molecular sieve material (Zeolites). As the wet/sour stream is processed in one column, the other column is regenerating. The switching valves on the molecular sieving system plays an important role of directing the inlet/outlet stream of gas into the columns from an adsorption phase into a regeneration and cooling phase in sequence. Cycling frequency varies depending on the molecular sieving system but typically these valves can cycle three or more times a day. The typical lifespan of other valve designs in this corrosive environment is approximately one year and routinely replaced during scheduled maintenance shutdowns.

Solution: ValvTechnologies’ zero leakage carbide coated metal seated ball valves were selected and installed for a major operator’s sour gas plant in Monkman, British Columbia. These valves feature the same design proven since ValvTechnologies’ first installation of valves in a molecular sieve system. The first installation is still providing severe service zero leakage isolation seven years after its initial installation. Given a conservative one day shut-down per year to replace other designed valves in a plant processing 220mmcfd of saleable gas at $750,000 per day, that is $5.25M in improved efficiency over the course of seven years.

As China quietly opened its economy to the West in the 1980s, the stage was set for a wave of globalization that swept the world and that continues unabated today.  One quiet casualty of China’s opening was the demise of the Soviet Union, which served to quicken the pace of globalization as former satellite states opened their economies to survive.  Other developing countries followed, including many of those markets identified as the BRICs, CIVETS, etc.  One continent was largely absent from that process though – Africa. With the exception of Africa’s oil producing states, many of its economies languished throughout the 1990s and the first decade of the twenty-first decade.

However, when South Africa hosted the 2010 World Cup, an African phrase rocketed around the world.  The phrase – Ke Nakom, means “It’s Time”.  To many in the business world, Africa’s economy, after decades of mismanagement and despotic plundering, began to emerge as a more attractive market, particularly for resource-intensive industries.  While many of the large multi-national companies have deep enough pockets to invest their time, energy and money, how does a company like ValvTechnologies benefit?  For a company that derives a considerable amount of its revenue from exports, it’s a mixture of opportunity, customer diversification, market expansion, and survival.

Three factors are fueling Africa’s emergence: 1) increased political and economic stability, 2) reduced government budget deficits, less foreign debt and a significant decrease in the rate of inflation, and 3) a number of governments adopted market-friendly  policies by privatizing large, state-owned companies, reduced trade barriers, corporate tax restructuring and a more transparent legal and regulatory climate.

Africa boasts an abundance of natural resources: 10 percent of the world’s proven oil reserves; 40 percent of the world’s gold, and over 80 percent of the chromium and platinum group metals.  In addition to natural resources, Africa’s infrastructure needs, including power generation, are gargantuan.  Nearly 24 percent of the continent’s GDP is dependent on the resource sector.  Other demographics for Africa, e.g., its sheer size and population, growing middle class, and education, point to opportunities in other industries such as transportation, telecommunications, and manufacturing.  The agriculture sector is also ripe for significant growth much of which will be fueled by foreign investment.

Does all of this rosy news equate to an easy entry into Africa?  Absolutely not.  Success in any market depends on a number of factors. Companies that are successful in Africa will embrace a fourfold strategy:

1) pick the right entry strategy, e.g., an agent/distributor or a joint venture/partner.  Whatever approach is used, local partnerships are not only important, they are necessary
2) ride the coat-tails of the multinationals that are already customers
3) the economies are not homogeneous, i.e., each country is separate and distinct from the other.  What works in one country doesn’t necessarily work in another
4) manage risk – assume nothing.

As the process of globalization increased, the emergence of Asia’s dragons and tigers drew a lot of attention.  Perhaps it is indeed time for Africa’s lions to assert themselves.

HOUSTON, TX – ValvTechnologies is pleased to announce that Julie Bodine, Director of Global Marketing, has been invited to be part of the 2014 Fittest Executive Challenge, taking place in Houston, Texas on February 23, 2014. This is an exciting fitness challenge for Houston Executives to raise awareness for fitness and health in the Houston business community and to recognize those passionate Executives who lead by example.

Bodine was selected as one of only 20 female executives to take part in the Fittest Executive Challenge. Each Executive will complete three fitness challenges within a 60-minute time-frame consisting of professionally designed courses to fully challenge their strength, agility, endurance, mental determination and full-body conditioning.

An avid CrossFitter, Bodine is no stranger to competition. Recent challenges include a first place finish in the Sundown Showdown team competition in Newport Beach, California, a seventh place finish in the Femme Royale Battle in Spring, Texas and an 11^th place finish in the Atomic CrossFit Hammer and Chisel competition in Stafford, Texas. Last year Bodine also completed in her first triathlon, the Kring and Chung, in Newport Beach, California.

Based in Stockton-on-Tees, Bowden will be responsible for the executive leadership of MCE including strategy and planning, business development, customer service and performance and operations management.

Bowden brings to MCE a track record of accomplishments in business and operations management, product development, purchasing, engineering and logistics. He previously served as Operations and Technical Director at Palintest, Ltd and Senior Process Improvement Engineer at Vision in Print.  Earlier in his career he worked as an Engineering Manager at Filtrona Filters and a Production Manager in Black & Decker’s UK Operation. Bowden began his career serving a four-year, multi-skilled maintenance technician apprenticeship at Nissan Motors’ UK Body in White plant. He then progressed to the position of process and planning engineer within the engine machining, assembly and final test facility.

Bowden earned a First Class Honors Degree in Manufacturing Engineering and Management at Sunderland University, is Six Sigma Black Belt certified and an expert in lean improvement tools and techniques.

Based in Houston, Texas, Marler will be responsible for all ValvTechnologies’ sales, marketing and service activities worldwide. This includes leading strategic sales and revenue growth, building sales and marketing capabilities, strengthening brand and competitive positioning, developing and deepening customer relationships and building out alternative distribution channels to extend market reach.

For more than 25 years, Marler served at ABB, Inc., a technology-based provider of power and automation products, systems, solutions and services, most recently as Vice President of its US Process Automation Systems business. In this role, he led sales, project and service organizations that served oil, gas, petrochemical, pulp and paper and metals market segments. Prior to that, he served as the President of ABB Vietnam where he managed all ABB operations in this rapidly developing economy, including producing transformers for both the local market and export. Additionally Marler held executive sales positions at ABB including Vice President for North American Strategic Accounts, Vice President Sales and Business Development and Western Region Vice President.
